dixit igitur Ahitofel ad Absalom eligam mihi duodecim miliavirorum et consurgens persequar David hac nocte

et inruens super eum quippe qui lassus est et solutismanibus percutiam eum cumque fugerit omnis populus qui cum eoest percutiam regem desolatum

et reducam universum populum quomodo omnis reverti soletunum enim virum tu quaeris et omnis populus erit in pace

17:4
placuitque sermo eius Absalom et cunctis maioribus natuIsrahel

ait autem Absalom vocate et Husai Arachiten et audiamusquid etiam ipse dicat

cumque venisset Husai ad Absalom ait Absalom ad eumhuiuscemodi sermonem locutus est Ahitofel facere debemus an nonquod das consilium

et dixit Husai ad Absalom non bonum consilium quod deditAhitofel hac vice

et rursum intulit Husai tu nosti patrem tuum et viros quicum eo sunt esse fortissimos et amaro animo veluti si ursaraptis catulis in saltu saeviat sed et pater tuus vir bellatorest nec morabitur cum populo

17:9
forsitan nunc latitat in foveis aut in uno quo volueritloco et cum ceciderit unus quilibet in principio audietquicumque audierit et dicet facta est plaga in populo quisequebatur Absalom

17:10
et fortissimus quoque cuius cor est quasi leonis pavoresolvetur scit enim omnis populus Israhel fortem esse patremtuum et robustos omnes qui cum eo sunt

17:11
sed hoc mihi videtur rectum esse consilium congregetur adte universus Israhel a Dan usque Bersabee quasi harena marisinnumerabilis et tu eris in medio eorum

17:12
et inruemus super eum in quocumque loco fuerit inventus etoperiemus eum sicut cadere solet ros super terram et nonrelinquemus de viris qui cum eo sunt ne unum quidem

17:13
quod si urbem aliquam fuerit ingressus circumdabit omnisIsrahel civitati illi funes et trahemus eam in torrentem ut nonrepperiatur nec calculus quidem ex ea

17:14
dixitque Absalom et omnis vir Israhel melius consiliumHusai Arachitae consilio Ahitofel Domini autem nutu dissipatumest consilium Ahitofel utile ut induceret Dominus super Absalommalum

et ait Husai Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotibus hoc et hocmodo consilium dedit Ahitofel Absalom et senibus Israhel et egotale et tale dedi consilium

nunc ergo mittite cito et nuntiate David dicentes nemoremini nocte hac in campestribus deserti sed absque dilationetransgredere ne forte absorbeatur rex et omnis populus qui cumeo est

Ionathan autem et Achimaas stabant iuxta fontem Rogelabiit ancilla et nuntiavit eis et illi profecti sunt utreferrent ad regem David nuntium non enim poterant videri autintroire civitatem

vidit autem eos quidam puer et indicavit Absalom illi veroconcito gradu ingressi sunt domum cuiusdam viri in Baurim quihabebat puteum in vestibulo suo et descenderunt in eum

17:19
tulit autem mulier et expandit velamen super os puteiquasi siccans ptisanas et sic res latuit

17:20
cumque venissent servi Absalom ad mulierem in domumdixerunt ubi est Achimaas et Ionathan et respondit eis muliertransierunt gustata paululum aqua at hii qui quaerebant cum nonrepperissent reversi sunt Hierusalem

17:21
cumque abissent ascenderunt illi de puteo et pergentesnuntiaverunt regi David atque dixerunt surgite transite citofluvium quoniam huiuscemodi dedit consilium contra vos Ahitofel

17:22
surrexit ergo David et omnis populus qui erat cum eo ettransierunt Iordanem donec dilucesceret et ne unus quidemresiduus fuit qui non transisset fluvium

17:23
porro Ahitofel videns quod non fuisset factum consiliumsuum stravit asinum suum et surrexit et abiit in domum suam etin civitatem suam et disposita domo sua suspendio interiit etsepultus est in sepulchro patris sui

17:24
David autem venit in Castra et Absalom transivit Iordanemipse et omnis vir Israhel cum eo

17:25
Amasam vero constituit Absalom pro Ioab super exercitumAmasa autem erat filius viri qui vocabatur Iethra de Hiesreliqui ingressus est ad Abigail filiam Naas sororem Sarviae quaefuit mater Ioab

et castrametatus est Israhel cum Absalom in terra Galaad

cumque venisset David in Castra Sobi filius Naas deRabbath filiorum Ammon et Machir filius Ammihel de Lodabar etBerzellai Galaadites de Rogelim

obtulerunt ei stratoria et tappetia et vasa fictiliafrumentum et hordeum et farinam pulentam et fabam et lentemfrixum cicer

17:29
et mel et butyrum oves et pingues vitulos dederuntqueDavid et populo qui cum eo erat ad vescendum suspicati enimsunt populum fame et siti fatigari in deserto

Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

017:002
And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:

017:003
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.

017:004
And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

017:005
Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

017:006
And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.

017:007
And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.

017:008
For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

017:009
Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

017:010
And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.

017:011
Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

017:012
So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.

017:013
Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

017:014
And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

017:015
Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled.

017:016
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

017:017
Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by Enrogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.

017:018
Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man's house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down.

017:019
And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known.

017:020
And when Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

017:021
And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counseled against you.

017:022
Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.

017:023
And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

017:024
Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

017:025
And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man's son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother.

017:026
So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.

017:027
And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

017:028
Brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse,

017:029
And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
